It was in the house of his gallerist friend Nick that David Hockney painted the naked silhouette coming out of the swimming pool from a Polaroid photograph. It is the silhouette of Peter, his boyfriend a 19-year-old painter whom he met while he was teaching. Hockney outlined his intentions in portraying the gay subject as a form of activism through art.
