Paris, before the First World War. Jim, a Frenchman, and Jules, an Austrian, are inseparable friends. They fall in love with the same woman, Catherine, but it is Jules that Catherine marries. After the war, Jim joins the couple in Austria. Catherine admits that she is not happy with Jules, who accepts that his wife takes Jim as a lover. But Catherine is eternally unsatisfied and constantly changes her mind about her choice of love.
