Hockney always represented what surrounded him: arriving in Los Angeles in January 1964, he painted swimming pools under the Californian sun. Portrait of an Artist, completed in 1972, invites the viewer to enter almost physically into the tranquil scene unfolding before them. However, despite the lush atmosphere with its palette of bright colors, this painting reveals a story of love and sincere feelings, of sorrow and affection for a former lover, it is a true emblem of the pop art movement.
