In his tribute to Lester Young, Basquiat on one level gives aesthetic form to the revolutionary rhythms of jazz as a means of celebrating the heritage of black culture and the historic achievements of black artists. Through this work, Basquiat emancipates himself from the authoritarian schools of painting that dominated American art until his arrival on the New York scene, while responding to the revolutionary sonic experience of Young's music.
